The internet or World Wide Web as we reverently called it then, was still a place full of wonder… (Yes, wonder about whether or not dot coms would ever make money).
In 1998 Amazon.com revenues were 600 Million (over 14 Billion today) and Google was still in beta (just starting out).
Here’s a fun quote from 2000 regarding Amazon.com:
“I don’t know if the company is smart or stupid,” jokes Peter S. Fader, professor of marketing at Wharton. Fader says the Internet-retailing industry is so young, so full of money-losing behemoths like Amazon, that there is no way to tell which business models will succeed.
So funny…
Don’t get overly excited or stressed about the latest changes online or that new shiny social network. Just remember. It’s 1998.
